AI agents need evidence, not another trust badge

A practical way to separate a recorded claim, an integrity check and independently reproduced evidence in AI systems.

THE TAKEAWAY

A tamper-evident record can still contain an incorrect observation.

Four questions for an AI claim

When a service claims a latency, uptime or accuracy result, ask what was measured, who measured it, how it was measured and whether someone else can repeat the check. A convincing interface does not answer those questions by itself.

Integrity is one layer

A cryptographic hash can help detect whether a recorded file changed. It does not independently establish that the contents are accurate. A signature adds a statement about the signing key, not a guarantee about the real-world event. The trustworthiness of the measurement process still matters.

Build an evidence chain

Useful evidence includes the measurement definition, relevant inputs, timestamps, software version and the limits of the test. A reproduction should state whether it reused the original data or collected independent observations. Agreement between two runs of the same supplied dataset is different from independent confirmation of a service’s behaviour.

Keep the commercial story separate

A product can generate useful records without its associated token having deployed utility. The existence of a token, partnership proposal or benchmark does not establish production adoption. Ask for the exact deployment and the measurable outcome. This article is an educational perspective, not an endorsement of a particular project.
