THE TAKEAWAY

A working app is not a substitute for a tested recovery plan.

Identify who controls signing

A self-custodial wallet gives its user responsibility for the keys needed to authorise spending. A custodial service manages that authority under its own account system. A hardware wallet is a signing device, not an insurance policy. Bitcoin.org’s security guidance emphasises backups and operational care; no single product removes the need to understand who can recover or move the funds.

Map the failure scenarios

Consider three separate events: a phone breaks, a device is stolen, or a backup is exposed. The response to each differs. A replacement phone may solve the first with a valid backup, while an exposed secret creates an ongoing security problem. A password protecting one app may not protect a recovery phrase copied elsewhere. Treat access controls and recovery materials as separate parts of the plan.

Practise without exposing real secrets

Learn the recovery process using an empty test wallet and the wallet maker’s official instructions. Confirm which backup format and any additional passphrase the software expects. Never paste real recovery material into a website, chat, screenshot or support ticket. A practice exercise should demonstrate the steps without creating a new copy of valuable secrets in an uncontrolled place.

Make the plan understandable

Write down the wallet product, supported recovery method and where trusted instructions can be found, without placing the secret itself in that document. Think about device failure and authorised inheritance as well as theft. For complex multisignature arrangements, specialist help may be appropriate. The objective is a recoverable and understandable setup, not collecting more devices than you can safely operate.
